A traffic accident involving three vehicles killed four people and injured five others in northern Afghanistan’s Samangan province, Taliban officials said on Sunday.

The crash occurred near the Rabatak Pass on the main highway linking Samangan and Baghlan provinces, close to the provincial capital Aybak, according to Hashmatullah Rahmani, spokesperson for the Taliban police command in Samangan.

Rahmani said a truck collided with two passenger vehicles, a Toyota Corolla and a Saracha, in the early hours of the morning. The injured were taken to the provincial hospital for treatment.

He said preliminary investigations indicated that driver negligence was the main cause of the accident.

Traffic accidents are common across Afghanistan, where poor road conditions, ageing vehicles, weak enforcement of traffic regulations and reckless driving contribute to high casualty rates.

Taliban authorities said earlier that hundreds of people were killed or injured in road accidents across the country in 2025, particularly along major highways connecting provinces. Many accidents involve heavy trucks and passenger vehicles travelling at high speeds on poorly maintained roads.

Afghanistan lacks a comprehensive national road safety system, and emergency response capacity remains limited, especially outside major cities.
