UN political chief meets Iran’s chargé d’affaires in Kabul

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo met Iran’s chargé d’affaires in Kabul, Ali Reza Bekdeli, Iran’s diplomatic mission in Afghanistan said on Sunday.

The Iranian mission said the two discussed the work of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), adding that DiCarlo called for Iran’s cooperation with the UN mission.

The United Nations has not commented publicly on the meeting.

DiCarlo arrived in Kabul on Saturday as part of a visit focused on the UN-led Doha process and broader engagement on Afghanistan. During the trip, she has also met senior Taliban officials, including acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and acting interior minister Sirajuddin Haqqani.

According to Taliban statements, those talks centred on international engagement and follow-up to the Doha discussions facilitated by the United Nations.
