Hunter Biden has publicly criticised his father’s immigration policies, describing the US withdrawal from Afghanistan as a clear failure.
In an interview with podcaster Shawn Ryan, Hunter Biden said the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan was poorly executed and resulted in avoidable loss of life, referring to the deaths of 13 US service members during the evacuation from Kabul.
“The way the withdrawal from Afghanistan was carried out was an obvious failure,” he said. “There was a better way to do it.”
He said that while mistakes are made by every US president, the handling of the Afghanistan exit stood out as a significant failure of the Biden administration.
Hunter Biden also criticised what he described as overly lenient immigration policies during his father’s presidency, saying they strained government resources and prioritised undocumented migrants over US veterans and citizens affected by decades of conflict.
“We need immigration, we need dynamic immigration,” he said. “But we don’t want undocumented migrants draining resources and being prioritised over real heroes.”
His remarks come as President Trump has intensified a hardline approach to immigration since returning to office, pledging to sharply restrict migration and expand enforcement measures.
The comments were made amid heightened political debate over immigration and public safety, following recent incidents that have drawn national attention, including the D.C. shooting, in which US authorities said an Afghan national was involved. The case has been cited by immigration critics as evidence of security failures, though officials have stressed that investigations are ongoing and have cautioned against drawing broader conclusions.
