The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said it has held technical-level talks with Taliban officials and member states as part of the UN-led Doha process, focusing on confidence-building measures in counter-narcotics, money-laundering, terrorism financing and other transnational crimes.

In a statement on X, UNODC said the engagement aimed to strengthen regional cooperation and support a coordinated response to cross-border threats affecting Afghanistan and its neighbours.

The session was opened by representatives of UNAMA, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and Qatar, which has hosted previous rounds of the Doha meetings.

Although UNODC released photos from the talks, it did not disclose where the meeting took place. The discussions were held earlier in December.

The UN said continued technical dialogue is essential for maintaining engagement with the Taliban authorities and advancing regional coordination against organised criminal networks.

The latest meeting forms part of a series of thematic working-group sessions launched after three formal rounds of the Doha talks on Afghanistan, the most recent of which was held in June 2024.
