The Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat, the state-run power distributor, said it has signed contracts worth $41 million for three power supply projects in Herat province with private companies.

In a statement, the Taliban-run company said the projects were signed with Zazo Afghanistan and Kabul Milli.

The contracts include the transmission of 220 kilovolts of power from the Noor al-Jihad substation to the Pul Hashemi substation and then to the “24 Hoot Martyrs” substation, as well as the construction of a new substation and related power lines.

The announcement comes as residents across Afghanistan complain of power shortages during the summer months, which they say have caused serious problems.

Only about 40% of Afghans have access to electricity, according to official figures. Some residents, especially in Kabul, say the outages have also left them without water, as the supply system relies on electricity.
