Uzbekistan delivers 183 tons of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan

TASHKENT — Uzbekistan has delivered a new shipment of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, with 183 tons of food supplies arriving in the northern province of Balkh this week, Uzbek state media reported Monday.

The aid convoy crossed into Afghanistan via the Hairatan border town and was transported from the city of Termez in Uzbekistan’s Surkhandarya region. The shipment included essential food items such as flour, rice, sugar, pasta, vegetable oil, red beans, mung beans, ready-made meals, and sweets.

A formal handover ceremony was held at the Hairatan crossing, attended by Uzbekistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Ismatulla Irgashev; Surkhandarya regional governor Ulugʻbek Qosimov; and Taliban officials, including their deputy governor of Balkh.

The delivery is part of Uzbekistan’s ongoing efforts to support humanitarian needs in Afghanistan and maintain regional ties with the Taliban administration, which returned to power in August 2021.
