Former Afghan soldier fatally stabbed in Iran, sources say

A former Afghan military officer was fatally stabbed by unidentified individuals in Iran, according to multiple sources familiar with the incident on Sunday.

The victim, identified as Ghulam Reza, was originally from Nahrin district in northern Baghlan Province and had served as an officer under the previous Afghan government.

Sources said the attack occurred on Saturday night, reportedly following a verbal altercation between the victim and his assailants in an unspecified Iranian city. He was killed at the scene after being stabbed multiple times.

Further details regarding the identity or motives of the attackers remain unclear, and Iranian security or judicial authorities have yet to comment publicly on the incident.

Since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, thousands of former military personnel, journalists and civil society activists have sought refuge in neighboring countries, including Iran and Pakistan, amid fears of retribution and a shrinking space for dissent.
