Karzai expresses hope his daughter and all girls can complete school in Afghanistan

Former President Hamid Karzai expressed hope on Thursday that his daughter, Malalai, will one day be able to complete her education inside the country—up to the 12th grade—alongside other girls in Afghanistan.

In a message posted to Facebook, Karzai shared news of his children’s academic milestones, including his son Mirwais’s graduation from high school and Malalai’s completion of primary school. He said he was proud of their achievements and wished success for all young Afghans.

“My daughter Malalai has finished primary school and is ready and determined to continue her education,” Karzai wrote. “I hope she, along with all her Afghan sisters, can complete high school up to grade 12 within our country.”

He added that it remains his hope that Afghan girls will one day be able to pursue higher education and serve their country through knowledge and professional contribution. “I wish for my daughter and all the girls of Afghanistan to reach their aspirations through university education and to become valuable contributors to their families and their homeland,” he said.

Karzai also thanked the faculty and administration of the Afghan-Turk High School in Kabul, where his children study.

His remarks come amid an ongoing education ban imposed by the Taliban, who, since returning to power in August 2021, have barred girls from attending secondary school beyond grade six and later extended the ban to include universities.

The restrictions have drawn widespread condemnation both inside Afghanistan and internationally, leaving the future of millions of girls’ education in limbo.
