DOHA, Qatar — Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani on Monday reaffirmed Qatar’s support for the Afghan people during a meeting with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s acting foreign minister, according to a statement from Qatar’s foreign ministry.
The two sides discussed the latest developments in Afghanistan and explored ways to assist the Afghan population, the statement said.
The Qatari prime minister emphasized his country’s commitment to backing “all segments of the Afghan people” and underscored Qatar’s continued efforts to promote security, stability, prosperity, and a dignified life in Afghanistan.
Muttaqi’s visit to Doha comes amid ongoing international efforts to engage with Afghanistan’s political future, including United Nations-led consultations with various stakeholders.
The meeting comes as the UN Security Council has issued a travel exemption for Muttaqi for a four-day visit to Doha for meeting “government officials.”
The trip comes as the UN is busy in consulting its stakeholders on a new proposed political plan for Afghanistan. Ahead of his visit to Qatar, Muttaqi held talks with India’s special envoy as well as the UN undersecretary.
