Taliban and Iran exchange 201 prisoners at border crossing

KABUL, Afghanistan — Iranian and Taliban officials exchanged 201 prisoners at the Milak border crossing in southeastern Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province, Iranian media reported Monday.

According to the reports, Iran handed over 199 Afghan nationals who had been imprisoned in Tehran, Isfahan, and Iranshahr. In return, the Taliban released two Iranian citizens who had been held in their custody.

The prisoner exchange took place at the Milak crossing, which borders Afghanistan’s Nimroz province. Officials from Iran’s Ministry of Justice, along with representatives from the Taliban’s Ministry of Justice, courts, and prison administration, were present during the handover.

The exchange comes after a visit of the Taliban’s delegation to Iran in which the two sides agreed to extradition and exchange of prisoners. In March, Iran handed over 360 Afghan prisoners in two phases to the Taliban.
