Second Afghan journalist detained in Islamabad amid migration crackdown

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Pakistani police on Sunday detained Afghan journalist Zahir Bahand in Islamabad, local sources reported, marking the second arrest of an Afghan journalist in the past week.

Last Monday, police also arrested Farishta Sadid, another Afghan journalist. Press advocacy groups say Sadid now faces imminent deportation to Afghanistan — a move they warn could endanger her life.

The arrests come amid Pakistan’s renewed campaign to expel Afghan migrants. Over the past few weeks, authorities have deported tens of thousands of Afghans and detained hundreds more.

Deported migrants have repeatedly reported mistreatment by Pakistani police, including harassment and arbitrary detention.
