BRUSSELS — Tomas Niklasson, the European Union’s special envoy for Afghanistan, concluded his tenure on March 1, marking the end of a mission that began in 2021 amid significant political upheaval in the country.
Appointed in the aftermath of the Taliban’s return to power, Niklasson played a pivotal role in shaping the EU’s response to the evolving situation in Afghanistan. His efforts focused on advocating for human rights, particularly those of women and girls, and coordinating humanitarian assistance during a period of profound change.
In a statement released on Sunday, April 13, Niklasson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve during such a critical time. He thanked the Afghan people, international counterparts, and colleagues for their support, cooperation, and constructive criticism throughout his tenure.
“I completed my mission as the EU Special Envoy for Afghanistan on March 1,” he stated. “I am thankful for the chance to serve in this role during a pivotal moment and remain appreciative of all those I met and worked with throughout this journey.”
Niklasson emphasized that his departure does not signal a shift in the EU’s approach to Afghanistan. “The EU continues to maintain its presence, its commitment to the people of Afghanistan, and its protection of EU interests and values,” he noted, adding that ongoing engagement with Afghanistan will be guided by decisions made by the EU Council.
Until a successor is appointed, Niklasson said his responsibilities will be carried out by Deren Derya, the head of the EU External Action Service’s division for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Niklasson, a seasoned Swedish diplomat, brought extensive experience in European foreign policy to his role. His tenure was marked by efforts to uphold human rights and coordinate the EU’s response to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s takeover of power.
