KABUL, Afghanistan — Four out of five residents of Kabul live in informal or substandard housing, according to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, also known as UN-Habitat. The agency warned that these communities are particularly vulnerable to the effects of extreme weather and climate-related disasters.
In a post on X on Sunday, April 13, the agency noted that more than 40 percent of Afghanistan’s urban population resides in the capital, underscoring the scale of the city’s housing and infrastructure challenges.
Kabul’s informal settlements, which often lack access to basic services and climate-resilient infrastructure, place residents at increased risk as weather patterns become more severe due to global warming.
UN-Habitat emphasized the urgent need for targeted climate action and international assistance to protect vulnerable populations in Afghanistan’s rapidly growing urban areas.
