Afghanistan defeats Oman by 8 wickets in U-19 World Cup qualifier

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Afghanistan’s under-19 national cricket team made a commanding start to their ICC U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Asia Qualifier campaign on Sunday, defeating Oman by eight wickets in just 11.1 overs.

Chasing a modest target of 92 runs, Afghanistan reached the total with ease behind strong performances from Khalil Ahmadzai, who scored 40 off 30 deliveries, and Uzair Khan Niazi, who added 27 runs from 20 balls. The two batters anchored the chase after an early wicket and ensured a smooth finish to the match.

Oman had earlier been bowled out for just 91 runs in 36.2 overs. Afghanistan’s bowlers dominated the innings, with Hafiz Zaitullah taking 2 wickets for 11 runs in an economical spell of 5 overs. Khalid also contributed with 2 wickets for 28 runs.

The match is part of the regional qualification stage for the 2026 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, currently being hosted by Nepal.

Afghanistan is grouped with Oman, Nepal, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates. The team is scheduled to return to the field on Monday morning against Hong Kong at 8:15 a.m. local time.
