YANGON, Myanmar — Afghanistan’s national football team lost its opening match of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualification round on Tuesday, falling 2-1 to Myanmar in a Group B match played in Yangon, the country’s capital.
Omid Popalzay scored Afghanistan’s lone goal during the match, offering a brief moment of promise in an otherwise difficult outing for the team.
Afghanistan shares its qualifying group with Myanmar, Pakistan and Syria. The loss puts early pressure on the team as it looks to secure a place in the continent’s premier football tournament.
