KABUL— Afghanistan’s national futsal team claimed third place in the Intercontinental Selecao Cup in Brazil after defeating Greenland in a penalty shootout on Sunday.
The match remained scoreless in the first half, but Afghanistan broke the deadlock in the second. Greenland responded with two goals to take the lead. In the final moments, goalkeeper Mohammad Jawad Safari substituted in for Alireza Jafari and scored the equalizer, pushing the game into penalties.
Afghanistan triumphed 4-2 in the shootout, securing a podium finish.
Earlier in the tournament, Afghanistan defeated Greenland 5-4 but suffered losses to Brazil (4-1) and Iran (4-3) in group-stage matches.
