HERAT, Afghanistan — Taliban publicly flogged a woman in Herat province on charges of extramarital relations, the Taliban Supreme Court said in a statement on Saturday.
According to the statement, the woman was sentenced to six months in prison and received 15 lashes after a ruling by a Taliban court in Herat, which was later approved by the Supreme Court.
The Taliban’s judiciary has intensified the use of corporal punishment in recent weeks. Official figures from the Supreme Court indicate that nearly 91 people, including women, have been flogged across multiple provinces in less than a month.
The Taliban’s use of public floggings and other corporal punishments has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organizations. Amnesty International has previously expressed concerns about the lack of due process and fair trials under the Taliban’s judicial system.
