Death toll in Kunduz explosion rises to 25: Sources

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan — The death toll from the Tuesday morning explosion outside a Kabul Bank branch in northern city of Kunduz has risen to 25, with at least 30 others wounded, according to local sources.

Most of those killed in the blast were Taliban members, according to local sources.

Among those killed was Zakariya, a Taliban security commander for Kunduz’s Police District 4, sources confirmed.

The Taliban police in Kunduz confirmed that the explosion outside a Kabul Bank branch in the city on Tuesday morning was a suicide bombing, stating that it killed five people, including both civilians and Taliban members, and injured seven others.

The explosion occurred around 8:30 a.m. local time, and the bodies of those killed have been taken to the Taliban’s 217 Omari Corps clinic, sources said.

The attack comes weeks after the Taliban ordered their military and security personnel to avoid banks when collecting their salaries and instead use designated locations.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing.
