Afghanistan’s embassy in Ankara

ANKARA, Turkey — Afghanistan’s embassy in Ankara is set to officially close on Thursday afternoon, with control of the mission expected to be handed over to Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to sources familiar with the matter.

A diplomatic source told Amu TV that Afghan diplomats at the embassy had refused to hand over control to Taliban representatives, prompting the Turkish government to step in.

According to the source, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry had formally requested the embassy’s closure in a letter sent on February 3. The move follows mounting pressure on the mission from the Taliban’s Foreign Ministry, the source added.

The closure marks another diplomatic setback for Afghan embassies that have resisted Taliban control since they took power in August 2021.
