BAMIYAN, Afghanistan — Taliban officials have shut down Tasa’ud School, an educational institution serving orphans and impoverished children in Bamiyan province, according to local sources.
The closure, which took place on Saturday, Feb. 1, came after Taliban members reportedly entered the school days earlier and ordered staff and teachers to vacate the premises.
Sources say Taliban fighters harassed, beat, and insulted staff and students before seizing their mobile phones. Witnesses also reported that Taliban members damaged school property, throwing some items outside and sealing off classroom doors.
While the Taliban have not issued a formal statement on the closure, sources cited an ongoing legal dispute as the possible reason behind the move.
Since returning to power in 2021, Taliban have imposed severe restrictions on education, particularly for girls and women, and have been accused of targeting independent or foreign-funded schools.
