South Korean authorities investigating cause of Air Busan plane fire

BUSAN, South Korea — Investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that broke out aboard an Airbus aircraft operated by Air Busan, South Korean authorities said Wednesday.

The plane caught fire Tuesday night at Gimhae International Airport, in the country’s south, as it was preparing for departure to Hong Kong, according to fire officials.

All 169 passengers and seven crew members were safely evacuated. Seven people sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital, with one remaining there for treatment on Wednesday, officials said.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze, which ignited inside the aircraft, shortly before 10:30 p.m. local time (1330 GMT), officials said.

The incident comes just a month after South Korea’s deadliest aviation disaster in years, when a Jeju Air plane arriving from Bangkok crashed while making an emergency belly landing at Muan International Airport. That crash killed 179 of the 181 people on board.
