Araghchi meets Taliban defense minister in Kabul

KABUL, Afghanistan — Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, met with Yaqoob Mujahid, the Taliban’s defense minister, during his visit to Kabul, Iranian officials confirmed.

The Taliban’s defense ministry said in a statement that Mujahid described Iran and Afghanistan as neighboring countries with deep commonalities and emphasized the importance of strengthening and expanding bilateral ties.

According to the statement, Araghchi underscored the shared interests of the two nations and highlighted the importance of fostering friendly relations and close cooperation across various sectors.

“The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations, economic collaboration, border management, and other related matters,” the statement said.

This meeting follows Araghchi’s earlier talks with the Taliban’s foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and their chief minister Mohammad Hassan Akhund.

The plight of Afghan migrants in Iran, the Helmand River Treaty and bilateral ties were focus of Araghchi’s meeting with Hassan Akhund.
