KABUL, Afghanistan — More than 2,800 fish farms are operating across the country, with an annual production capacity of nearly 13,000 tons of fish meat, according to Taliban officials.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock, led by the Taliban, said the farms—2,870 in total—operate at small, medium, and large scales and are contributing to the country’s agricultural sector.

However, some fish farmers have voiced frustration over insufficient support and rising operational costs. They argue that better financial aid and technical assistance could help expand local fish farming, reducing Afghanistan’s reliance on imported fish.

The country currently depends heavily on fish imports from neighboring nations, including Pakistan. Many citizens have criticized the quality of imported fish and have called for increased investment in domestic production to support local farmers.

Taliban have not yet detailed plans to address these concerns or boost support for the sector.
