Iran’s president highlights border security, Afghanistan’s stability as priorities

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday emphasized the importance of Afghanistan’s stability and growth for Iran during a joint press conference with Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon on Thursday.

Speaking in Dushanbe, Pezeshkian stated that Afghanistan’s development aligns with Iran’s strategic interests.

“Maintaining border security is very important to us, and the necessary measures have been taken in this regard,” Pezeshkian said, underlining the significance of secure borders with Afghanistan.

Pezeshkian noted that Iran and Tajikistan discussed a range of regional issues, including the situation in Afghanistan. Rahmon, for his part, highlighted the importance of bilateral efforts to combat terrorism, extremism, and drug trafficking, which remain persistent challenges in the region.

The meeting marked an important step in strengthening Iran-Tajikistan ties, with Pezeshkian signing 23 cooperation agreements across various fields during his official visit. These agreements reflect growing collaboration between the two nations on economic, security, and cultural fronts.

The discussion on Afghanistan comes amid continued uncertainty over the country’s future, as regional powers navigate the challenges posed by the Taliban’s return to power and its broader implications for security and stability.
