Afghanistan secured a historic 72-run victory on Monday over Zimbabwe in the second Test at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, clinching a 1-0 series win.
This marks Afghanistan’s fourth-ever Test victory and further solidifies their growing reputation in the longest format of the game.
The match began with Afghanistan being bowled out for a modest 157 in their first innings, with Zimbabwe’s bowlers, led by Blessing Muzarabani (4-48), taking early control. Zimbabwe responded with a solid 243 in their first innings, establishing an 86-run lead.
However, Afghanistan mounted a remarkable comeback in their second innings. Anchored by Rahmat Shah’s commanding 139 and Ismat Alam’s maiden Test century (101), they posted a formidable 363. This set Zimbabwe a challenging target of 278 for victory.
Rashid Khan then turned the game decisively in Afghanistan’s favor. His first-innings figures of 4-94 had kept Afghanistan in the contest, but it was his second-innings haul of 7-66 that dismantled Zimbabwe’s chase. Despite a fighting 53* from Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine, the hosts were bowled out for 205, falling 72 runs short of the target.
Rashid Khan’s incredible all-around contribution earned him the Player of the Match award. Across the game, he took 11 wickets (4-94 and 7-66) and chipped in with useful lower-order runs (25 and 23), playing a pivotal role in Afghanistan’s victory.
Rahmat Shah’s consistency with the bat was the cornerstone of Afghanistan’s batting efforts throughout the series. With 392 runs at an average of 130.66, including a double century and a century, he was named Player of the Series.
This hard-fought win highlights Afghanistan’s resilience and growing maturity in Test cricket. From a precarious position in the first innings to dominating in the final stages, Afghanistan demonstrated grit and skill in all facets of the game.
