The Taliban-run Ministry of Public Works announced that the Salang Pass will reopen to all vehicles, including freight and passenger traffic, on Tuesday, December 24.
Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas, the ministry’s spokesperson, in a statement urged travelers to follow safety guidelines while using the vital route, which connects northern Afghanistan to the capital, Kabul.
The statement warned that violators of safety protocols would face consequences. Travelers were advised to adhere to the following precautions:
Check weather conditions and confirm the pass is open before embarking on a journey.
Carry winter gear and equipment.
Observe traffic laws, avoid speeding, and refrain from reckless overtaking.
Pay attention to warning signs and maintain proper traffic distance.
Avoid travel if the pass is closed due to snowstorms or other severe weather conditions.
Follow the instructions of Salang Pass staff.
Longstanding Challenges and Public Frustration
The Salang Pass, an essential artery of Afghanistan’s infrastructure, is particularly vulnerable to harsh winter weather, which frequently disrupts travel and underscores the need for sustained maintenance and investment.
