On the occasion of International Migrants Day, observed on December 18, the European Union reiterated its commitment to supporting Afghan migrants and internally displaced persons (IDPs).

In a statement on X, the EU emphasized its efforts to integrate migrants and IDPs into their communities through educational programs, job creation initiatives, and economic support.

“Everyone deserves a safe and secure home,” the EU statement read.

Afghanistan remains one of the world’s leading sources of migrants, alongside Syria. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), nearly 8 million Afghans have fled the country since 2020.

Of these, 85 percent have sought refuge in neighboring countries, particularly Iran, while close to one million have migrated to Europe.

Lack of job opportunities has been the primary driver behind Afghan migration. Other contributing factors include widespread poverty, human rights violations, limited access to education—particularly for women and girls—and arbitrary detentions and security threats.
