G7+ representatives hold meeting on Afghanistan in Geneva

GENEVA — Special representatives for Afghanistan from the G7+ nations gathered in Geneva on Monday to discuss the country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis and explore opportunities for coordinated action to support the Afghan people.

The meeting, hosted by Switzerland, brought together diplomats and officials amid growing international concerns over Afghanistan’s economic collapse, widespread food insecurity, and escalating restrictions on women and girls under Taliban rule, Heinrich Schellenberg, Head of the Asia Pacific Division at the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, said.

Schellenberg said the discussions focused on identifying ways to jointly address one of the world’s “most persistent, severe, and complex humanitarian crises.”

The G7+ forum, which includes major donor countries and international partners, has played an increasingly active role in shaping the international response to Afghanistan since the Taliban regained power in August 2021.
