KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — A fire broke out on Monday near the Edigah Mosque in Kandahar, the capital of the southern province, causing an estimated $25,500 in financial losses, local sources reported.
The incident occurred in Police District 4, a commercial area of the city. Witnesses attributed the fire to negligence but did not provide further details about its cause.
No casualties were reported, but the fire has raised concerns among local business owners who suffered damage to their shops and inventory.
Kandahar, a cultural and economic hub in southern Afghanistan, is also home to the reclusive Taliban leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, who rarely appears in public but is believed to reside in the province.
