Heavy snowfall shuts down Herat-Torghundi Highway

HERAT, Afghanistan — The Herat-Torghundi highway, a critical route in western Afghanistan, has been closed due to heavy snowfall in the Baghr-e-Chir area, local Taliban officials said Sunday.

Taliban officials from the Herat Department of Public Works said efforts to clear the road and reopen the route are underway.

The highway connects Herat province to the Torghundi border crossing, a vital trade and transportation link.

Heavy snowfall during the winter season often disrupts travel on major roads in Afghanistan, posing significant challenges for residents in remote and mountainous areas.

This closure follows the recent shutdown of the Salang Pass, another key route, which has been closed to large vehicles until January 24 due to hazardous winter weather.
