HARARE, Zimbabwe — Afghanistan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during the second T20 International against Zimbabwe on Friday, Dec. 13.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the penalty on Saturday, stating that Naib had breached Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

“Naib has been penalized for violating Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to ‘showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match,’” the ICC said in a statement.

The incident occurred during the 11th over of Zimbabwe’s innings when an lbw appeal against Tashinga Musekiwa, off the bowling of captain Rashid Khan, was turned down. Naib displayed dissent by bowing in mock prayer and gesturing for a review, despite the Decision Review System (DRS) not being available for the match.

In addition to the fine, a demerit point was added to Naib’s disciplinary record, his first offense in a 24-month period. The former Afghanistan captain admitted to the charge and accepted the sanction proposed by Match Referee Andy Pycroft, avoiding the need for a formal hearing.
