The Taliban-run Ministry of Energy and Water announced it has signed a cooperation agreement with a private company to invest in the Kama irrigation and power dam in Nangarhar Province.
The contract was signed by Abdul Latif Mansour, the Taliban’s minister for energy and water, and representatives from the Irfan Hilal Construction Company, according to a statement from the ministry. The agreement grants the company rights to modernize, expand, and develop the dam’s irrigation system, which is expected to significantly improve water resource management and energy production in the region.
Afghanistan continues to rely heavily on imported electricity, particularly from Central Asian nations. Farmers, facing outdated agricultural systems and limited infrastructure, have repeatedly expressed frustration over low crop yields due to inadequate irrigation.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s national power utility, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), recently announced the extension of its electricity import agreement with Turkmenistan through 2025.
