UNITED NATIONS — The United Nations Security Council extended the mandate of the sanctions monitoring team overseeing measures against the Taliban and other entities threatening peace and security in Afghanistan for an additional 14 months.
The decision, adopted unanimously on Friday by the council’s 15 members, reaffirms the continuation of sanctions against the Taliban, including asset freezes, travel bans, and an arms embargo, until the end of this period.
The U.S. representative to the United Nations hailed the resolution as a vital step in supporting Afghanistan’s stability and emphasized the need for rigorous enforcement of the sanctions to ensure their effectiveness.
