KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban extended congratulations to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the rebel group that toppled the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, expressing hope that the power transition in Syria would lead to the establishment of a government aligned with “the aspirations of the people and Islamic values.”
In a statement released by the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Assad’s regime was described as a “cause of war and instability” in Syria.
The Taliban expressed optimism for a new system of governance based on Islamic principles.
The remarks come as the Taliban themselves remain diplomatically isolated, more than three years after they seized power in Afghanistan. No country has yet officially recognized their rule.
The international community and regional powers have repeatedly urged the Taliban to form an inclusive government that reflects the will of the Afghan people, a demand that remains unmet.
