Afghanistan: Heavy rains, floods forecast for eight provinces

KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban-run meteorological department has forecast heavy rain, snowfall, and potential flash floods across eight of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces on Sunday.

In a statement, the department identified the affected provinces as Badakhshan, Takhar, Kunduz, Panjshir, Baghlan, Parwan, Maidan Wardak, and Bamiyan. Rainfall is expected to range between 15 and 30 millimeters, while snowfall is projected to reach 10 to 25 centimeters in some areas, according to the statement.

The warning comes as the Taliban reported the deaths of three children who became stranded in snow in Badakhshan’s Raghistan district on Friday evening. The children, aged 9 to 12, were unable to escape worsening weather conditions.

Afghanistan’s vulnerability to extreme weather events has been exacerbated by decades of conflict, poor infrastructure, and climate change. The United Nations has ranked Afghanistan as the sixth most vulnerable country to the impacts of climate change, highlighting the increasing risks posed by severe weather.
