OIC, UK envoys emphasize need to ‘enhance engagement with Taliban’

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia — The Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Tarig Ali Bakhiet, in a meeting with Andy McCoubrey, the United Kingdom’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, on Monday emphasized the need to “enhance engagement with the Taliban” to address issues facing the country and its people.

The meeting, held at the OIC headquarters, centered on key issues raised during the recent United Nations meeting of special envoys for Afghanistan in Doha–which was held in June.

“Both sides underlined the pressing need to enhance existing engagement with the de facto authorities in a bid to effectively grapple with the multiple challenges, including economic, humanitarian, and human rights priorities, facing the country and its people,” OIC said in a statement.

Discussions highlighted economic instability, a worsening humanitarian crisis, and concerns over human rights as pressing priorities requiring coordinated international action.

The exchange underscored the importance of dialogue and collaborative efforts to support the Afghan people and navigate the complex political and social landscape within the country.
