KYIV, Ukraine — Explosions echoed across Kyiv and other cities early Sunday as Russia launched its largest missile attack on Ukraine since August, striking energy infrastructure as the country braces for winter, officials said.
“Another massive attack on the power system is under way,” German Galushchenko, Ukraine’s energy minister, wrote on Facebook. “The enemy is attacking electricity generation and transmission facilities throughout Ukraine.”
Air defense systems could be heard engaging drones over the capital during the night. By morning, a series of powerful blasts shook the city center as missiles targeted key facilities.
The extent of the damage was not immediately clear. Officials preemptively cut electricity to parts of Kyiv and surrounding areas, as well as the Dnipropetrovsk region, to mitigate the risk of surges in case of further strikes.
The attack comes as Ukraine enters its second winter of war, with energy systems already strained from months of assaults on power facilities.
