Taliban delegation attends South Asian regulatory conference in India

A Taliban delegation led by Barat Shah Agha Nadeem, head of the Taliban-run telecommunications regulatory authority (ATRA) attended a conference in India focused on regulatory bodies across South Asia’s telecommunications sector.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesperson, said in a statement on X that the delegation’s visit was intended to facilitate their participation in the conference alongside representatives from other South Asian nations.

This marks the first official visit by a Taliban delegation to India since they assumed control of Afghanistan three years ago.

The trip follows another recent diplomatic development involving India. Earlier this week, India accepted a Taliban-appointed diplomat at Afghanistan’s consulate in Mumbai. India’s Ministry of External Affairs clarified that the diplomat’s appointment is strictly for consular services and “does not imply recognition of the Taliban government.”

Last week, a high-level Indian delegation led by J.P. Singh, India’s deputy foreign minister, traveled to Kabul, where they met with senior Taliban officials, including acting Defense Minister Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid and acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.

Despite these interactions, Indian media reports emphasize that formal recognition of the Taliban government would involve a specific diplomatic process, with India aligning its approach with that of the broader international community.
