Afghanistan’s Embassy in Australia has announced that its consular services remain operational despite what it described as efforts by the Taliban to disrupt the embassy’s functions.

In a statement on Monday, the embassy said that the Taliban have attempted to interfere with the consular activities of diplomatic missions representing the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in recent months.

“These actions reflect the Taliban’s approach of harassment and blatant violations of fundamental and human rights, as well as international conventions,” the statement read. “Lacking both domestic and international legitimacy, they continue to subject our citizens to harassment, even outside of Afghanistan.”

The Taliban-run Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared in August that documents issued by Afghan diplomatic missions in certain European countries, as well as in Canada and Australia, were not recognized as valid.

The ministry’s statement mentioned repeated calls to Afghan embassies and consulates in European nations, urging them to cooperate with Taliban authorities to address consular issues affecting Afghan citizens in those countries.

Following this directive, some Afghan diplomatic missions in Europe, including the embassy in the United Kingdom, suspended their operations.
