PANJSHIR, Afghanistan — Mohammad Agha Hakim, the Taliban governor of Panjshir, met with Roza Otunbayeva, the head of the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), on Monday where he requested support from international organizations and donors for infrastructure and other development projects in the province, according to a Taliban statement.
Hakim emphasized that Panjshir’s security environment is now stable enough to facilitate development and improvement initiatives, the statement said.
During the meeting, Otunbayeva reportedly noted that she found the “security and human rights situation in the province to be good” and expressed the U.N.’s readiness to cooperate in various sectors. She also indicated that U.N. agencies would direct their attention to Panjshir.
This meeting comes amid recent reports from the United Nations documenting human rights violations in Panjshir, including arrests of residents by the Taliban.
UNAMA has not yet commented on Otunbayeva’s visit to the province.
