KABUL, Afghanistan — A man and a woman were publicly flogged in the northeastern province of Takhar on charges of engaging in an extramarital relationship, according to a statement from the Taliban’s Supreme Court.

Both individuals received 39 lashes in the Farhar District, the statement said.

Over the past month, nearly 90 individuals, including several women, have been publicly flogged across various provinces.

A recent United Nations report documented 111 public floggings by the Taliban from July to September, noting that these punishments included 95 men, 15 women, and one girl. The report underscored the Taliban’s increasing use of corporal punishment since their return to power.

Last month, the U.N. Human Rights Council condemned the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment and called for an immediate end to such practices. Amnesty International also raised concerns, citing the lack of fair judicial processes in Taliban courts as a significant human rights issue.
