Over 3,000 Afghan migrants deported daily from border: Iranian official

TEHRAN — More than 3,000 Afghan migrants are being deported daily from Iran’s Dogharoun border crossing, according to Hossein Sharafi-Rad, the director of foreign nationals and migrants affairs in Iran’s Razavi Khorasan Province.

Sharafi-Rad noted that this year’s deportations represent a 40 percent increase compared with last year.

On a visit to the border town of Taybad on Saturday, he emphasized the need for a dedicated camp to process the high volume of Afghan deportees, adding that a 20-hectare plot of land has been allocated for this purpose, pending support from relevant Iranian authorities.

The official said that detaining, gathering, and deporting Afghan migrants remains a priority for the Iranian government through the end of this year.

Iran’s crackdown on Afghan migrants has intensified in recent months, mirroring similar actions by Pakistan. Meanwhile, some Afghan refugees in both countries have reported mistreatment by local police, describing practices that they say violate basic human rights and protections for asylum seekers.
