Afghanistan set to tour Zimbabwe for all-format cricket series

The Afghanistan Cricket Board confirmed on Tuesday that Afghanistan’s team will embark on an all-format cricket tour to Zimbabwe, featuring two Tests, three One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

The series is scheduled to run from December 9, 2024, through January 6, 2025.

The tour will open with a three-match T20I series at Harare Sports Club, with games on December 9, 11, and 12. A three-match ODI series will follow, also in Harare, on December 15, 17, and 19. The tour will conclude in Bulawayo with two Tests, the first from December 26 to 30 and the second from January 2 to 6, incorporating Boxing Day and New Year’s fixtures, a time-honored tradition in cricket.

Mirwais Ashraf, chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board, expressed satisfaction with Afghanistan’s active cricket schedule in 2024. “This year has been quite productive for us both domestically and internationally, and we’ve achieved significant milestones. We are committed to expanding our bilateral cricket calendar and bringing more glory to our nation,” he said.

On the upcoming Zimbabwe series, Ashraf noted its significance, adding, “We have a strong history with Zimbabwe, and playing there is always a challenge—one I believe AfghanAtalan can face confidently.”

Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani expressed enthusiasm about the series. “Boxing Day and New Year’s Test matches are iconic fixtures we are thrilled to add to our calendar this festive season. Matches between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan are always intense and exciting, and we anticipate the players will deliver performances worthy of such a historic tour.”

Afghanistan will arrive in Zimbabwe on December 6 and will have two practice sessions before the opening T20I on December 9.
