PARWAN, Afghanistan — Taliban publicly flogged four people, including a woman, in the central province of Parwan on Monday, as part of an ongoing series of corporal punishments imposed across Afghanistan.
According to a statement from the Taliban’s Supreme Court, the individuals were punished on charges of “fleeing from home and sodomy.”
Each person received 39 lashes, and two were sentenced to one year in prison while the other two received six-month prison terms. The sentences were issued by a primary court in Sayed Khel district.
Over the past month, the Taliban have publicly flogged more than 70 people, including women, in various provinces, a practice that has drawn international condemnation.
Last month, the U.N. Human Rights Council passed a resolution denouncing the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment and calling for an immediate halt. Amnesty International also voiced alarm, citing the lack of fair trial procedures within the Taliban judicial system as a “grave” concern.
