Iran executes seven, including Afghan national

TEHRAN — Iran has executed seven individuals, including one Afghan national, according to a report by Hengaw, a human rights organization.

The identity of the Afghan citizen is still under investigation, the group said.

The seven were convicted of crimes related to drug trafficking and the production or sale of poisonous alcohol and were sentenced to death by Iranian courts. They were executed on Wednesday morning in Kazakh Hisar and Karaj prisons.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Human Rights Organization, another watchdog, reported that two Afghan nationals were transferred to solitary confinement in Qom Central Prison, while two others were moved to solitary cells in Shiraz Central Prison. “It appears that all four have been sentenced to death on charges of ‘premeditated murder’ in separate cases,” the group stated.

This comes amid growing criticism from Afghan citizens. Human rights groups have reported a sharp increase in the number of Afghan nationals executed in Iran since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan.
