Taliban publicly flog five, including woman, in Maidan Wardak

Taliban publicly flogged four men and a woman in Maidan Wardak Province on charges of theft and “illicit relations.”

The Taliban-run supreme court said in a statement on Monday that two of the individuals were lashed 25 times and were sentenced to one month in prison for allegedly engaging in “immoral relations.” The other three were each flogged 25 times.

This latest incident follows similar punishments carried out by the Taliban in recent weeks.

This weekend, seven men and a woman were publicly flogged in Kunar Province, bringing the number of individuals flogged by the Taliban to more than 35 over the past three weeks.

The United Nations Human Rights Council has condemned the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment, urging an immediate end to these practices.
