Death toll from Israeli strikes on Lebanon reaches 558, minister says

The death toll from Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon has risen to 558 since Monday, including 50 children and 94 women, according to Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad. He also reported 1,835 wounded, as hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah intensify.

On Tuesday, Israeli forces launched strikes on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah retaliated by targeting military facilities in northern Israel, raising fears of a broader conflict. The escalation follows Lebanon’s deadliest day in decades.

The Israeli military confirmed it had struck dozens of Hezbollah targets overnight, continuing its operations after Monday’s airstrikes. The attacks have prompted tens of thousands of people to flee to safety.

In response, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for several attacks on Israeli military positions, including an explosives factory located 60 kilometers inside Israel. The group said it used Fadi rockets in the assault, which occurred around 4 a.m. local time. Additionally, Hezbollah reported attacking the Megiddo airfield near the Israeli town of Afula three times overnight.

The intensifying conflict comes after nearly a year of fighting between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza. Israel is now turning its attention to its northern border, where Hezbollah has been firing rockets in support of Hamas, which is also backed by Iran.
