President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India on Monday, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, as the Ukrainian leader continued to seek international support for his country amid its war with Russia.
In their third bilateral meeting, Mr. Zelensky urged Mr. Modi to back Ukraine’s efforts to achieve what he called “a shared victory for a truly just peace.” Footage released by the Ukrainian Presidential Press Service showed the two leaders embracing.
Mr. Modi’s engagement with Ukraine has grown in recent months. He became the first Indian prime minister to visit Ukraine in August, where he encouraged Mr. Zelensky to pursue dialogue with Russia in hopes of finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict. India, traditionally nonaligned, has sought to balance its relations with both Ukraine and Russia as the war has dragged on.
That trip came shortly after Mr. Modi’s visit to Moscow in July, where he met with President Vladimir V. Putin. On the day of that visit, a Russian missile struck a children’s hospital in Ukraine, killing civilians and heightening tensions in the region.
Mr. Zelensky has continued to use high-profile international forums like the U.N. General Assembly to bolster support for Ukraine as it faces the ongoing Russian invasion, while nations like India have called for diplomacy to end the conflict.
