U.S. congressman introduces bill to back anti-Taliban political opposition

Representative Tim Burchett of Tennessee has introduced a bill aimed at supporting a political platform opposing the Taliban, reinforcing his stance that the group remains a terrorist organization.

The legislation calls for U.S. involvement in the Vienna Process, an initiative that brings together Afghan political factions united against Taliban rule.

“The Taliban has always been a terror group,” Burchett said. “They lied when they promised things would be different this time around.” He expressed gratitude to Scott Mann, a former Green Beret, and other experts for their input in shaping the bill.

Burchett’s office released a statement outlining the bill’s objectives, which include a formal condemnation of the Taliban as a terrorist organization and an appeal for greater international engagement with the Vienna Process. The platform, established in Vienna, Austria, seeks to unify anti-Taliban political forces and build a coordinated opposition.

Burchett drafted the bill following discussions with Mann, as well as Afghan American military veteran known as “Legend,” and former Navy SEAL and CIA operative Shawn Ryan, now a prominent podcast host.

The legislation underscores ongoing U.S. concerns about the Taliban’s leadership in Afghanistan and reiterates the importance of standing with the Afghan people amid the nation’s political turmoil.
