Prosecutors’ association claims 16 dead in Kabul attack

The Afghanistan Prosecutors’ Association condemned Monday’s deadly attack in Kabul, claiming that at least 16 prosecutors were killed and several others injured.

This contrasts sharply with the Taliban’s official death toll of six.

In a statement, the association criticized the Taliban’s claims of nationwide security, stating that “there is no comprehensive security in Afghanistan, and the promises of a general amnesty and widespread safety are false.”

The group likened the nature of the attack to the terror assaults carried out against judicial and legal officials during the previous republic. “The nature of this attack is no different from the terrorist acts that targeted judicial personnel during the time of the republic,” the statement said, adding that prosecutors remain targets of revenge by “terrorist groups,” including the Taliban.

Monday’s attack occurred in Qala-e-Bakhtiar, in Kabul’s sixth district. While the Taliban reported six deaths and 13 injuries, other sources suggest the number of casualties is higher.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the bombing, stating in a statement that more than 45 people, including Taliban members, were killed or wounded in the explosion.
